I conducted thousands of screening interviews during my time as a Recruiter. What always amazed me was the lack of preparation job seekers did for these interviews. These are important interviews. Recruiters are the gatekeepers. If you cannot answer the questions posed and show you are a potential fit for the job, you will not move forward—end of story.
I do not foresee one-way video interviewing going away any time soon. Employers are always looking for ways to make their recruitment process more efficient, and if they feel this type of interview brings value, they will adopt it.
An interview should not be a one-way conversation with you only answering questions. While the interviewer evaluates you and your fit for the role, you should be doing the same, assessing whether the position and company fit you.
I asked this question in almost every interview I conducted. Why? Because I wanted to understand more about the person’s career moves. When a person changed job, it told me what was important in their life and career. It also told me if they struggled in a job. I wanted to know this to determine if the role that I had would be a good fit.
While panel interviews can be a bit more intimidating than one-on-one interviews, you can easily do a fantastic job. Remember to do your research ahead of time on the people who will be speaking with you and build rapport with everyone. Do those two things, and you will be ahead of your competition and win everyone over to support you for the role.
Q.) I have been told that I am overqualified and so have not yet been hired anywhere. I am willing to take a pay cut, so wouldn't I be a bargain to an employer with my experience?
Interviewers have a reason why they ask a particular question. It is crucial for the person being interviewed to understand this. If you know the motivation behind a question, you can have a better strategy for answering it.
Part of building a relationship is to take an interest in the other person. Making the effort to learn about your interviewer(s) can pay dividends in helping the interviewer have positive feelings about you, address any objections, and ask questions that the interviewer will find interesting.
1) I am currently out of work and have been offered a contract position with a possible hire to full-time. I really wanted a full-time job. Should I do this?
